Hiring a Fire & Security Engineer starts with a clear description of the work you need someone to do.

A broad job title can attract applicants with very different backgrounds. A useful vacancy brief explains the systems involved, the responsibilities, the working arrangements and the experience that matters to your business.

Here is a practical checklist to help you prepare.

1. Define the engineer’s main responsibilities

Start with the work the person will spend most of their time doing.

Is the position focused on installation, servicing, maintenance, fault finding or commissioning? Does it combine several responsibilities?

Explain whether the engineer will work independently, support another engineer or supervise projects. Include any responsibility for customer communication, technical reports, quotations or mentoring.

A clear description helps candidates understand the position before applying.

2. Specify the systems and environments

“Fire and security” covers a range of systems. Identify those relevant to the vacancy, such as:

Name manufacturers or platforms where experience is important. Distinguish between knowledge someone must bring on their first day and knowledge they could develop through training.

Describe the working environments too. Commercial offices, industrial premises, residential properties and multi-site contracts can involve different routines and expectations.

3. Separate essential requirements from preferences

A long list of requirements can make it difficult to see what genuinely matters.

Divide your brief into:

Essential requirements: the skills, experience and qualifications necessary to perform the role.

Desirable experience: useful additional knowledge that could strengthen an application.

Training available: areas where you can support someone’s development.

Check that any stated qualifications, licences or screening requirements are relevant to the actual duties. Avoid copying requirements from an older advert without reviewing them.

4. Explain the location and travel

Give candidates a realistic picture of the working area.

Include the usual coverage region, reporting location and whether the role involves overnight stays. Explain any arrangements for travel time, vehicle use and expenses.

If the engineer will attend different customer sites, describe what a typical working week could involve. Clear expectations help both sides assess whether the opportunity is practical.

5. Describe the full package

Basic salary is only one part of an offer.

Where applicable, explain:

Make any conditions clear. For example, distinguish guaranteed pay from potential overtime earnings.

Candidates can make a more informed decision when they understand the package as a whole.

6. Explain why someone would join

Describe the business beyond the vacancy.

What kind of team would the engineer join? Who would support them? What types of customers and projects would they work with?

Use specific, accurate examples of development opportunities rather than broad promises. If progression could involve commissioning, supervision or project management, explain what that pathway might depend on.

7. Agree the recruitment process

Before advertising, decide who will review applications, conduct interviews and make the hiring decision.

Agree which skills you need to explore at interview and whether a practical assessment is appropriate.

Set a realistic timetable and decide how feedback will be shared. A clear process helps your team assess applicants consistently and keeps candidates informed.

A vacancy brief checklist

Before starting your search, check that you have covered:

You do not need a lengthy document. You need enough accurate detail to explain the opportunity and identify what a suitable candidate would bring.
